The final Round of Australia’s East Coast Circuit was held on Saturday 1 st of August 2009.
A small but determined pack of 15 competitors showed up to hone in their competition skills as this was the last event before the September 2009 World Titles.
The Wollongong event was held at Sandon Point’s bombie. The right hand point break produced consistent 3-4+ft waves all day with winds blowing from the South/West (off/cross shore wind) ranging from a mild 10 knots in the morning, picking up to a gusty 20+ knot as expected for the finals. This produced contestable waves with some solid and steep take offs out the back (just ask Brett AKA Pigmy with his 5ft+ “dropped coffin” style take off in the Masters Final). Waves were walling up nicely only to be affected by the chop on the inside section that tested all surfers ability to hold a rail. Especially Larry Adams who forgot to put his centre fin in his ski.
All in all the day was sunny, about 19 deg. and the competitors were able to find shelter from the cool wind down beside the surf club house. The comp was held over the one day and a bbq was dragged down to the comp site where bacon and egg rolls were served up for lunch by Dale’s Parents (Allan and Mary-Anne).
Entry fee’s were divided evenly through each division as 1 st and 2nd place prizes. Third and fourth place received an ancient scroll exhumed from a tomb beneath Bazil Repa’s garage from the days of Wollongong Club.
I personally would like to thank everyone who was there for helping out with judging or running the event. With such small numbers it was a blessing to have everybody volunteer where possible to lend a hand and as a result the comp went smooth and was able to be completed in the one day.
